We have received numerous request for hints on
how to win the B.Org Award(s). So here are a few of the specific criteria we use to
judge a site by. These are not in order of importance. That would make it too
easy. 1. If the site is hosted by a free
service that likes to pop up advertisements, they must be kept on the page.
2. Sites with entrance pages that you have to scroll down
forever, will never be awarded.
3. Sites that have everything centered, and in one column,
won't even be considered.
4. Transparent gif images, should not have jagged edges of a
different color.
5. Any unauthorized use of copyrighted material, or
uncredited work by others, will prevent an award from being given.
6. Slow loading time of the pages, especially the main one,
is a sure fire death knell.
7. Keep it clean. A cluttered page is not good design.
8. All gifs and jpegs should be optimized to decrease the
load time.
9. Navigation of a site is a critical design element.
Don't force the visitor to have to use the back button on their browser as a means of
navigation.
10. If you are going to use advanced Web technology, be sure
it works.
11. Control your font sizes. Especially if you use
backgrounds on the Web site to emphasize areas of text. If the text extends off of
the stripe you have down the left, it looks like an ameteur did it.
12. Make sure your design holds up at different browser
resolutions. Not everybody in the world runs their browser full screen at 800x600
pixels.
13. Spelling and grammar count.
14. Break the mold in design. Make the panel think,
"Gee, isn't that a novel approach!" |
